While the pacing moves at a wonderful brisk pace along with Ron Howard's lavish direction, the movie, while faithfully depicting the Land Run of 1893 event perfectly, suffers from a clichéd romance between Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman (the same thing would be used in James Camerons "Titanic" except the romance between Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet was done pretty flawless) and dialogue so tedious it would make you cringe throughout the film. If fans are interested in Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, then this is for you, but only if you studied the historical event in Geography.

The story is ridiculously old-fashioned, with romantic flourishes and visual spectacle (the land-rush scenes are outstanding) in place of an interesting storyline and well-developed characters.


When they get to the new land, they find jobs and begin saving money. The stereotypical, opposites attract characters - Tom Cruise's rough bruiser, Nicole Kidman's fiery aristocrat, Robert Prosky's burdened rich man - John Williams' by-the-book, authentically inauthentic score, and Tom's authentically inauthentic accent (which is at least consistent). Otherwise, stick to Titanic.
