It captures the atmosphere, mood and isolation nicely. Still, as a homage to Carpenter's (far better) movie and as a bit of escapist...As I thought this was a remake I was quite prepared for a bit of a let down, however it pleasently surprised me. Surprised by just how good this is.

This Prequel is surprisingly a worthy movie, playing (again)on diffrent fears eg, exclusion & been excluded by a diffrent language, isolation -Kate (Winstead's character) discribes the thing as a virus--and making the often (read into) virus that many saw Carpenter's Thing to represent. The Thing itself is gruesome, and a great monster that taps into everyone's fear of being attacked by something thats almost human but not quite. I know it was played by James Arness, and was humanoid (a guy in a Thing suit, you could say). A prequel very well done. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven and...I got tickets to the free screening of The Thing. The number of times a remake is better than the original can probably be counted on one hand. It wasn't very scary, but it had genuine nailbiting moments. At an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson. While in my opinion it clearly isn't as good as Carpenter's classic, the 2011 prequel is still well worth a watch for fans of the 1982 original. If you haven't seen Carpenter's film you will enjoy it - on the other hand if you have seen it I think you are likely to be pretty unimpressed. ... also titled The Thing, was released in 2011. In...It's a reasonably safe bet to say that very rarely will a remake of a film meet the standard set by an original, as of course if the source material was bad in the first place, a remake would likely not even be considered. The more you see of a monster, the less you get. If you want to make a prequel it would help if you watched the sequel .The acting and special effects were not bad-on the whole it was dragged and boring. Some sweet gore, it's truly fantastic. A freak storm unleashes a species of bloodthirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. Just like when we were kids. A lot of people didn't like this and that's fine. A polar research station is invaded by an alien life form. Recommended and hoping they do a sequel to the JC version!

Special affects not as good as first film and story line could be better, but otherwise a good film.
