I thought she was the Whore of Babylon.The only thing that carried this movie was Depp. Telfer's widow Liana seduces Corso, in a failed attempt to get the book back. Not only did he NOT have the correct originals (we are told one of them was a forgery), but that the devil didn’t really want him in the first place.The Ninth Gate (as I understand it) was having sex with the French demon chick in front of that burning castle.OK, now go ahead and correct me. I don't believe. Balkan performs his summoning ritual: he arranges the engravings on a makeshift altar, and recites a series of phrases related to each of the nine engravings. She tells him that Balkan failed because the ninth engraving he had used was a forgery. Of note, this is not the mark as it is described in the book or the screenplay. Her true identity is never revealed in the movie, but viewers have referred to her variously as Satan/Lucifer, a demon, a witch, a gatekeeper or guide from Hell, and the Whore of Babylon. In both the book and screenplay, the two get it on after she "marks him" but the movie takes a different course: Corso gets a call and goes down to the lobby to talk with Balkan on the phone. This is why Corso is the chosen one. Why does she do this? The final illustration is enacted by him and the (unnamed) girl (a servant of the devil). The complete background of the Girl was never revealed. Corso frees himself, shoots Balkan in mercy, takes the engravings, and escapes. There is an obvious sexual tension between the two and Corso does seem to be coming under her spell. OK, so in the film, we get to see Dean Corso (Johnny Depp) running around different parts of Europe (Potugal and France, to be more precise), searching for two copies of a book called The Nine Gates (of something or other).

Is she just playing around? Corso meets with wealthy book collector Boris Balkan, who has recently acquired a copy of Balkan's copy was acquired from Andrew Telfer, who killed himself soon after. I don't recall anything to do with a secret blood pact. saw one? Balkan's invocation fails, and he screams in pain as the flames engulf him. "… Corso finds "LCF" on three different engravings in the Baroness's book, confirming his theory. “Sorry - no Satan shots for you.” I wasn’t that pissed off at the failure to deliver at the end of a movie like that since they didn’t have any goddamn aliens in I saw this movie in the theater. When Liana steals Balkan's copy from Corso's hotel room, Corso and the Girl follow her to her chateau, and witness her using the book in a Satanic ceremony with an audience of robed rich people present. In the novel the girl was a fallen angel (they don’t use the word “demon”) who had found Corso and was assisting Corso because Corso could be considered a fallen soul, just like the girl, and so the two had that in common.
Actually, I wasn't sure about the tag. Playfully, she runs Why is Corso chosen?And any more symbolism and hidden meanings, please feel free to elaborate.Since we have obviously both spent more time on this than Polansky, allow me to give you my interpretations as they differ from yours:I believe Boris Balkan was murdering people to cover his tracks.

The fact remains: the sign looks like a particular letter Vav (Secret blood pact? LCF has fallen in love with Corso. Corso explains this mid-way through as 3 x 3 (=9 ----> or the nine gates - get it?). Couldn't even find a master's thesis for Club Dumas, which surprised me.Isn't Monster Energy's label being some satanic reference just some urban myth? Also, all three have different engravings - I get that.Now my understanding is that each of the pictures pertains to something that had occured to Corso. It was used by the Cathars to defend themselves, during the Albigensian crusades in the thirteenth century. For what purpose?
